"Il Libro Eterno" intervista: Beth Fantaskey

Beth Fantaskey, autrice dei "Promessi Vampiri/Jessica's guide to dating on the dark side" (potete trovare la mia recensione qui) e “Jekel Loves Hyde” (inedito in Italia), è una professoressa universitaria, la cui più grande paura (stando alla sua biografia) è parlare in pubblico, seconda solo a quella di volare.

Ama molto viaggiare (probabilmente non in aereo) e ha passato un periodo della sua vita in India, abbracciando un progetto di difesa dei diritti umani.

Beth è stata così gentile da rispondere alle domande di questa intervista.

Welcome to my blog, Beth. Can you tell us something about yourself?

Sono una scrittrice a tempo pieno – scrivo di tutto, dai romanzi ai discorsi – nello stesso tempo sono una professoressa part-time al Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, e madre di due bambine che non hanno ancora il permesso di leggere i miei libri!

I’m a full-time writer – everything from novels to speeches – as well as a part-time professor at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, and the mother of two little girls who aren’t allowed to read my books yet!


Quando hai deciso di diventare una scrittrice?

When did you decide to become a writer ?

In realtà, non l’ho proprio deciso. Quando mi sono laureata, non avevo prospettive di lavoro, così quando un amico mi ha informato che un ufficio di pubbliche relazioni stava assumendo degli scrittori, ho fatto domanda di assunzione. Quando ho consegnato la mia prova scritta, l’uomo che sarebbe diventato il mio capo mi ha detto “Lo sai che sei una scrittrice, vero?” Sono stata assunta ed è quello che ho fatto da allora – grazie al cielo!

Actually, I didn’t really decide. When I graduated from college, I had no job prospects, so when a friend mentioned that a public relations office was hiring writers, I applied. When I turned in my writing sample, the man who would become my boss said, “You know you’re a writer, right?” I got hired on the spot, and that’s what I’ve done ever since – thank goodness!

Quali sono i tuoi libri e autori preferiti?

What are your favorite books and authors?

Sono una grandissima fan dei classici – in particolar modo dei romanzi di Jane Austen e Charles Dickens. Dickens è indubbiamente il mio autore preferito. Il mio libro preferito, però, è il Conte di Montecristo di Dumas. Comprende tutto, l’umorismo, le avventure e un tenebroso, divertente e carismatico eroe. Adoro quel romanzo!

I am a huge fan of the classics – especially anything by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. Dickens is definitely my favorite author. My favorite book, though, is The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas. It’s got everything – humor, adventure and a dark, funny, charismatic hero. I love that novel!

Puoi dirci qualcosa sul tuo romanzo i “Promessi Vampiri”? E’ l’inizio di una serie?

Can you tell us a little about your novel, "Jessica's guide to dating on the dark side"? Is this the beginning of a series?

Ne i “promessi vampiri” si narra di una normale – razionale adolescente americana che scopre di essere una principessa vampira dalla nascita, e destinata a sposare un principe di un clan rivale che è apparso sulla soglia di casa nei panni di uno studente straniero. Se Jessica non sposa Lucius all’età di diciotto anni, adempiendo al patto firmato alla loro nascita, inizierà una guerra fra vampiri di proporzioni mondiali.

Anche se non ho pianificato una serie completa, sto scrivendo il seguito proprio adesso. Si chiama “Jessica Rules the Dark Side” e uscirà negli Stati Uniti il prossimo autunno (2011).
Jessica’s Guide is about an average, rational American teenager who discovers that she is a vampire princess by birth, and destined to marry a rival clan’s prince, who has shown up on her doorstep in the guise of a foreign exchange student. If Jessica doesn’t marry Lucius at age 18, fulfilling a pact signed at their births, a global vampire war will start.
Although I don’t have a full series planned, I am writing the sequel right now. It’s called Jessica Rules the Dark Side, and it will be released in the U.S. next fall (2011).


Perché hai scelto di scrivere romanzi sui vampiri?
Why did you choose to write about vampires?

All’inizio ho immaginato i “Promessi Vampiri” come una storia di adozione. Volevo scrivere una storia su una ragazza razionale e con i piedi per terra, che scopre che i suoi veri genitori erano diversi da qualsiasi cosa avesse immaginato – e come questo sconvolge il suo mondo.
Ho deciso di far diventare vampiri i genitori di Jessica perché sono molto vicini agli “umani” in termini di aspetto e abitudini, ma sono anche “mostri”. Avevo bisogno di scegliere esseri che erano quasi credibili, ma ancora lontani dalla normalità per far dire a Jessica: "No ... questo è impossibile ..."
I primarily envisioned Jessica’s Guide as an adoption story. I wanted to write about a grounded, logical girl who discovers that her birth parents were different from anything she could have imagined – and how that rocks her world.
I decided to make Jess’s birth parents vampires because they are very close to “human” in terms of appearance and habits, but “monsters,” too. I needed to choose beings who were almost believable, but still far enough outside the norm to make Jessica say, “No… that’s impossible…”

What are your future plans? Do you have any other projects you're currently working on?
